Florence Oramasionwu with stage name "Flo" is a seasoned physiotherapist and one of the most talented music artists in Canada. Born to Nigerian parents and raised in a multi-cultural neighborhood in Winnipeg. She knew that music was her future and was drawn to it at an early age. Flo is known as an R&B and Pop phenomenon. She’s a captivating artist with undeniable stage presence. When artists like Divine Brown, Lauryn Hill, Boyz II Men and 112 are looking for opening acts, they come to Flo. Whether it’s a huge arena like the MTS Centre or the Centennial Concert Hall, Flo is in her element on stage, while her powerful, emotive voice shakes the rafters.
Now, Flo is following up the success of her 2007 self-titled album with her sophomore release, “Pieces of Me”, crowned urban album of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards 2012. The song was produced by Arun Chaturvedi who won “Producer of the Year” Award at the Western Canadian Music Awards 2011. Flo is an artist who represents encouragement, personal strength, passion and positivity. If you were searching for a soulful pop singer with a huge, heart-stopping voice, the Canadian Prairies is likely not the first place you’d start looking. But that’s exactly where you’ll find Flo.
Flo’s enduring message of faith and self-empowerment reflect an inner struggle: to overcome all obstacles and follow her dreams, "I believe this dream is bigger than I am.”
Luckily for Flo, her voice is bigger than her dreams. She is passion personified.
"And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." - Nelson Mandela
Tell us a little bit more about yourself?
The best way to describe myself is as a person who believes that each and every one of us is born with a purpose and a destiny on this earth. That we each have a unique contribution to make in this world with our gifts/capabilities. That we all have a desire to pursue dreams, to reach our full potential. And I have found that in music.
Tell us something not many people know about you?
I have sky-dived
What's your inspiration or how do you get motivated?
Listening to motivational speakers, reading incredible quotes and books about bringing dreams to fruition. I love surrounding myself with positive people who aim to be the best they can be; and encouraging others to reach their full potential. Hearing beautiful music and witnessing amazing artists in action, creatively inspires and motivates me to create songs of excellence and to raise the bar in every way. I also get inspired and motivated when I find out that my music is making a difference in the lives of others; that it's connecting with people, letting me know that I'm on the right path and that I've got to keep doing what I'm doing.
How did you get to where you are now and what more should we expect?
Wow, the best way to sum it up: a lot of faith, prayer, and hard work. The right doors opening at the right time. What more should you expect? bigger and greater things! The future is bright and THE BEST IS YET TO COME!! Stay tuned...;)
What would you like to be remembered for?
I want my music to have an impact on people, to last beyond my lifetime. I want my music to make people think, touch their hearts, and pierce their souls. I aspire for my music to empower, inspire, uplift, and connect with people of all walks of life, no matter what their age, sex, or creed is and for my music to break boundaries.
How do you balance work, family, friends and leisure?
Balance can be a struggle but is one of the most important things for a healthy life. Sometimes a constant reminder is needed for me to keep things in check. Prioritizing and knowing what matters most to me, and what I want to give most of my time to is very important. I'd have to say that my faith, my family and friends help to keep me grounded. They help with maintaining balance.
What's your favorite food, book, music and movie?
Food? That's a tough one, I love it all! If I had to pick, the first thing that comes to mind is a good gourmet pizza or sushi. Does dessert count? Because hands down I can tell you it would either be a carrot cake or red velvet cake!!
Book? I've read so many, so I'll go with the most recent books that have left an impression on me: the Alchemist and the Shack were both two great books!
Music? hands down R&B/soul!
Movie? I loved the Shawshank Redemption and the Gladiator.
What's your experience as a Black person in Canada?
My experience as a Black person in Canada has been one of the richness of multiculturalism, but also the reminder of the fact that I am a minority.
